Parent’s Guide to Kids’ Teeth Cleaning and Oral Care Activities

A strict oral routine is equally important for your kids as well. Proper teeth cleaning techniques and regular dental hygiene are some of the effective methods of protecting your kids from oral problems such as tooth decay, gum diseases and cavities to name a few.

At SmilePerfectors, our little patients are equally important to us; hence, we have an oral care program for kids where we see them every 6 months for an examination, clean and scale, floss, fluoride treatment and if necessary, x-rays. This is how we try to make sure that your kid has minimal plaque levels and does not accumulate excessive tartar, which is difficult to remove with everyday brushing. But, being a responsible parent, it is only your part to make your kids aware about the importance of oral care and make them follow some day to day oral care activities.

Effective Brushing Techniques for Kids

For kids, brushing and other oral care activities are fun, and they may not take it seriously, but being a parent, it is important for you to help your kids brush their teeth until they are at least 8 years old. This is because they do not have the coordination to do so on their own.

If it is for the first time, then start by using a soft toothbrush. Remember, for kids, use a toothpaste that is low foam, low mint and low fluoride. When you are teaching your kids how to brush, place the toothbrush at a 45-degree angle and start along the gum line with a soft bristle brush in a gentle circular motion. Brush the outer surfaces of each tooth, upper and lower. Effective brushing techniques ensure removal of plaque from the inner, outer and chewing surfaces of the teeth. In the end, don’t forget to brush the tongue as it helps freshen breath and remove bacteria.

Flossing – 5 Simple Steps to Follow

Flossing is important, but here are some steps to follow;

– It is advisable to start with a of floss about 40cm long and wind most of it around one of your middle fingers.

– Wind the remaining floss around the same finger of the opposite hand.

– Then with a gentle back and forth motion, slip it between their teeth, and form it into a C shape around the edge of the tooth, to sweep away debris.

– Wrap the excess floss around fingers so you can use a new section of floss as it becomes dirty.

– Repeat until all spaces between the teeth are cleaned.

Well, you can also consider using floss picks or sticks instead of regular string floss, because it may be more convenient for your kids and you.

Along with the regular oral care activities, make sure you take your kids to an experienced pediatric dentist for a routine dental checkup. Professional teeth cleaning at least twice in a year ensure good oral health – free from cavities and tooth decay.
