The Scary Issue Of Halloween Candy

Halloween is just around the corner and your day will be full of pumpkins, ghosts and trick or treaters. For us here at Smile Perfectors, the scariest part is the candy. All that sugar!

But seriously, we are not going to say no treats for the little ones. Rather we will give some advice on how to handle the sugar issue so the cavities don’t come calling long after the jack-o-lanterns have burnt out.

Please check out CDC Guideline for Trick or Treating and Other Halloween Activities to keep your little ones safe during Covid

All Things In Moderation

Let your children enjoy some of the candy that is delivered to your doorstep during the tradition of Halloween. In advance, tell them how much they are allowed to eat on Halloween. Then tell them the rest will be put away for another time.

This way, they can get excited about Halloween treats and have reasonable expectations of what they are allowed to consume.

Water Helps

Consuming water assists to rinse away the sugary substances that can cause cavities. Give your children water to drink after they have eaten candy or any other sugary treats.

Education Opportunity

If you are giving out Halloween treats to the ghouls, monsters and other scary creatures arriving at your door, let your children give them a combination of healthy and not-so-healthy treats.

Have candy, juice and fresh fruit treat options for your kids to pass to visitors. Also, stock up on non-eatable treats like Halloween-themed stationery and novelties.

After Care Is Essential

After the Halloween excitement has ceased and you are sure the last witch has left the building, it’s time to hit the bathroom. Make sure your children clean their teeth with extra care tonight using dental floss, toothpaste and mouthwash if they are old enough. Ensure all the chewy pieces of candy are out of their mouths so their pearly whites are perfect again.
