Sport Drinks and Your Oral Health – Whether It’s Good or Bad?

In the past few years, the consumption of energy drinks and sports drinks have increased a lot. While these drinks are meant to offer you the required energy and seem to be harmless, some researchers from the Academy of General Dentistry (AGD) has released a study stating that the increased consumption of energy and sports drinks along with a decrease in water consumption may be leading to a greater risk for cavities.

Drinks Have High Sugar & Acid Content

The number of health-conscious people who have kicked cold drinks out of their routine is more than ever, but many of them have turned towards the sports and energy drinks believing it is good for their health. Unfortunately, these energy and sports drinks are equally sugary and acidic as cold drinks. When the researchers at the Academy of General Dentistry tested the effects of sports and energy drinks, the result was shocking. The tested tooth enamel began to weaken after just five days of testing, which included soaking the tooth in sports or energy drinks for 15 minutes at a time four times a day. While energy drinks caused twice as much damage as sports drinks, both types of beverages weakened the enamel, putting teeth at risk for decay.

Avoid or Limit High-Sugary Energy and Sports Drinks

The most favorable way to protect your teeth from damage due to sports and energy drinks is to limit or avoid the consumption of sports and energy drinks. Additionally, you should consume these drinks quickly rather than sipping them, which exposes the teeth to higher levels of acid. You should also make sure you’re drinking plenty of water to rinse the sugary beverages off of your teeth. Moreover, you should follow a strict oral care routine such as brushing your teeth twice a day, flossing and using mouthwash at least once a day.

Over the top, make sure you visit your family dentist at least twice or thrice in a year just for the routine checkup. During these appointments, your dentist will not only provide through professional dental exams and teeth cleanings, but they will also review your at-home oral hygiene routine to ensure you’re making the most of your dental care outside of the dental clinic.
