Compared to other oral treatments to restore your damaged teeth, Dental Crowns are quite on budget and durable. Moreover, it is a simple process that offers lasting solutions for teeth imperfections. Whether you have a chipped tooth or a discolored tooth, crowns can easily fix it.

People are aware of how crowns can fix certain tooth imperfections. They, however, may not know the different fantastic crown options they have at their disposal. Before going into details about the different options you have, let us first shed some light on the dental crown itself, especially for those individuals who do not know what it is.

Basically, dental crowns are nothing but “caps” shaped as per the structure of a tooth. Since no two tooth-structures are same, crowns are custom-made every time. Skilled dentists place crowns over a tooth either for its cosmetic enhancement or for the purposes of protecting the tooth. There are several reasons why you might want to consider dental crowns, including to restore size, shape, and even the strength of a tooth.

Here’s the Dental Crown Options You Have

These days, there are four popular types of dental crowns available. They are:

– Metal

– Porcelain-fused-to-metal

– Resin

– Ceramic

Metal Crowns

If you are looking for a durable option, then metal dental crowns are the best. They last longer than the other three available options. Metal crowns do not break or chip. Furthermore, they do not cause wear to other teeth. Different metal choices are also available, including but not limited to silver, gold, and platinum. The problem with metal crowns is that they are very noticeable. If you don’t mind showing off, then metal crowns will not be a problem! Such dental crowns are ideal for molars and pre-molars.

Porcelain-fused-to-metal Crowns

Porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns, just like the metal dental crowns, are an ideal option for someone who is looking for durability. Further, they become more suitable for those who desire crowns that match the color of their natural teeth. As the name implies, such crowns are part porcelain and part metal. The visible part of a porcelain-fused-to-crown is porcelain matched to tooth color, and the rest is metal of your choice. Such dental crowns are the best for front teeth.

Resin Crowns

Resin crowns are an affordable option in contrast to other dental crown types. They, however, wear down with time. They are also more susceptible to fracturing in contrast to crowns made from other materials. These crowns make a great choice if you are looking for a temporary solution. For instance, you may need a temporary crown during a dental treatment, like a root canal. In such cases, resin crowns would prove to be affordable and ideal.

Ceramic Crowns

Ceramic crowns are not too strong in contrast to metal crowns, but they do deliver a natural look. They can easily be matched to the color of your natural teeth. They are also suitable for those who have an allergy to metal. Since ceramic crowns have the ability to match the color of natural teeth, they can be used in dental bridges to fill the gap left by a missing tooth.

Root Canal Tysons – Here are 5 Myths About Root Canal Treatment Debunked

The Root canal is a dental treatment to protect a badly decayed tooth or infected tooth. Under the hard, outer, external layer of enamel and dentin is a soft tissue called as pulp that houses blood vessels, nerves and connective tissue.

Root Canal Tysons – Here are 5 Myths About Root Canal Treatment Debunked

When the pulp becomes inflamed or infected because of deep decay, a crack in the tooth or bad crown, Root Canal Treatment becomes extremely necessary. If the tooth is left untreated, the infection can get worst and may need further surgical intervention and sometimes the tooth may actually have to be extracted. Root canal treatment is destined to save a tooth; but still people get worried when the treatment is suggested.

However, Here are the 5 Root Canal Myths Debunked by Endodontic in Tysons, and they are;

1. Root Canal is a Painful Treatment – Virtually root canal is a pain free treatment. Contradictory, root canal treatment, in fact relives pain as it removes the pulp, which is the main reasons for the pain. Moreover, with the advancements in the dental technologies, trainings, equipment – modern day root canal treatment is totally painless.

2. Root Canal Treatment Needs Several Visit to Dental Clinic – Many people believe that tooth extraction is better that the root canal as it is quicker. Well, it’s not true in every medical condition. In some medical conditions, tooth extraction is the solution, whereas in some instances, you have to go for a root canal. If you are avoiding root canal treatment just because you have to visit a dental clinic for multiple times and shell out your money, then it’s a myth. Root canal treatment usually requires 1 to 3 visits. It is basically the condition of the tooth that determines the number of visits required.

3. Root Canal Treatment is Not Always Successful – Some patients also avoid root canal treatment saying that the success rate of treatment is very low. Well, not to surprise, root canal procedures have about 95% success rate, if treated by an experienced endodontist (By: American Association of Endodontist). If you are taking a good care of tooth and surrounding gums, the natural tooth can last life time without any further treatment.

4. Root Canal Treatment Causes Illness – Another widespread myth about root canal treatment is that people usually fall ill after the root canal procedure. This myth is based on a poorly designed and debunked research that took place almost a century ago. In fact, root canal treatment is the procedure to remove the bacteria from the infected part of the mouth and protect the mouth. Root canal treatments are designed to fight infection, not cause it.

5. A Root Canal “kills” the Tooth – Root canal treatment is destined to protect the infected tooth and not kill it. During the procedure, an endodontic cleans and disinfects the tooth and allows it to heal. Hence, root canal does not kill a tooth.

Parent’s Guide to Kids’ Teeth Cleaning and Oral Care Activities

A strict oral routine is equally important for your kids as well. Proper teeth cleaning techniques and regular dental hygiene are some of the effective methods of protecting your kids from oral problems such as tooth decay, gum diseases and cavities to name a few.

Parent's Guide to Kids’ Teeth Cleaning and Oral Care Activities

At SmilePerfectors, our little patients are equally important to us; hence, we have an oral care program for kids where we see them every 6 months for an examination, clean and scale, floss, fluoride treatment and if necessary, x-rays. This is how we try to make sure that your kid has minimal plaque levels and does not accumulate excessive tartar, which is difficult to remove with everyday brushing. But, being a responsible parent, it is only your part to make your kids aware about the importance of oral care and make them follow some day to day oral care activities.

Effective Brushing Techniques for Kids

For kids, brushing and other oral care activities are fun, and they may not take it seriously, but being a parent, it is important for you to help your kids brush their teeth until they are at least 8 years old. This is because they do not have the coordination to do so on their own.

If it is for the first time, then start by using a soft toothbrush. Remember, for kids, use a toothpaste that is low foam, low mint and low fluoride. When you are teaching your kids how to brush, place the toothbrush at a 45-degree angle and start along the gum line with a soft bristle brush in a gentle circular motion. Brush the outer surfaces of each tooth, upper and lower. Effective brushing techniques ensure removal of plaque from the inner, outer and chewing surfaces of the teeth. In the end, don’t forget to brush the tongue as it helps freshen breath and remove bacteria.

Flossing – 5 Simple Steps to Follow

Flossing is important, but here are some steps to follow;

– It is advisable to start with a of floss about 40cm long and wind most of it around one of your middle fingers.

– Wind the remaining floss around the same finger of the opposite hand.

– Then with a gentle back and forth motion, slip it between their teeth, and form it into a C shape around the edge of the tooth, to sweep away debris.

– Wrap the excess floss around fingers so you can use a new section of floss as it becomes dirty.

– Repeat until all spaces between the teeth are cleaned.

Well, you can also consider using floss picks or sticks instead of regular string floss, because it may be more convenient for your kids and you.

Along with the regular oral care activities, make sure you take your kids to an experienced pediatric dentist for a routine dental checkup. Professional teeth cleaning at least twice in a year ensure good oral health – free from cavities and tooth decay.

If you have any questions related to kids oral care, then we insist you to contact our pediatric dentist today at https://www.smileperfectors.com.

Here’s Why You Need to Quit Smoking Before Considering Dental Implants by Dentist in Tysons

Dental Implant is one of the highly recommend dental treatment if you are missing teeth. It not only offers you the look and feel of the original teeth, but it also functions as good as the natural teeth. However, if you are missing teeth, and have considered dental implants as a treatment to restore your smile, then please read this blog before you proceed. There is one lifestyle habit that is a deal breaker if you want to have successful dental implants.

Here’s Why You Need to Quit Smoking Before Considering Dental Implants by Dentist in Tysons

Smoking not only affects your oral health, but also have adverse effects on our overall health. But, if you are considering dental implants to restore your smile, then be cautious, as smoking can drastically increase your chances for dental implant failure. Dental implants carry a 95% success rate, but within the small percentage of implants that fail, over half belong to those who smoke.

Here’s How Smoking Adversely Implants the Dental Implants

Smoking can lead to oral cancer; hence, whether you are considering dental implants or not, you should quit smoking asap. It leads to some most common dental problems such as bad breath, tooth stains, gum disease and plenty of other dental problems. However, when it comes to dental implant surgery, the consequences are even more severe. Smoking can lead to below mentioned consequences in someone who is considering dental implants:

1. Severe Damage to Skin Cells – When you smoke cigarettes, you potentially burn and/or thicken the surface of the delicate skin cells inside the mouth.

2. Excess of Dry Mouth – Cigarette smoking also contributes to dry mouth because the salivary glands can become damaged over time. And, as you know, dry mouth offers the best environment for the bacteria to grow and breed. Further, these bacteria become more vulnerable to infection and decay.

3. Obstructs Blood Flow and Natural Oral Healing Abilities – The biggest risk of

smoking and dental implants is rooted in the fact that nicotine is a vasoconstrictor. It limits the flow of blood that nourishes the gums and teeth. Hence, when gums and teeth are deprived of nourishments, they lose their natural ability to heal automatically and cannot fight against the infection and bacteria. This becomes a real problem for a newly placed dental implant, as the healing of the titanium post within the gum tissue and bone is the most crucial step of the implant process. Cigarette smoking can essentially slow healing while increasing the risk of infection and implant failure.

Quit Smoking for Healthy Smile

If you regularly smoking cigarette, then it is advisable to quit smoking for the overall goodness of your health. However, if you are getting dental implants, then it is mandatory you quit it asap. Put an end to your nicotine habit a week before your implant surgery and up to two weeks following the procedure to protect your healing and recovery.
